Project Description:  This project provides much needed pedestrian and bicycle connectivity between Keystone Avenue and Allisonville Road.  Prior to the construction of the trail, bicycle and pedestrian traffic had to use the side of the roadway.  This new trail provides an easy access for users to reach other trails in the area as well as to reach nearby commerce.

This project runs through the front yard easements of more than 50 houses and provides a safe location for commuters and recreational use by the installation of a 10 foot multi-use path.  This project was designed to fit within the existing right-of-way and to accommodate a meandering trail alignment to blend with the neighborhood.

The pathway extends along the south side of 62nd Street. The total project length was 1.35 miles.  The existing right turn lane on 62nd Street between Keystone Avenue and Rural Street was removed to allow space for the proposed multi-use path.  A buffer varying in width from four feet to 22 feet was established between the roadway and the multi-use path.  Additionally, ADA compliant curb ramps and cross walk striping were constructed at each of the major intersections.

From a recent Indianapolis Star article, one resident of the area stated “It’s opened up a whole new way of getting around.  It’s the greatest thing.”  The resident went on to say, “I was worried about strangers, but it seems like such an active, family environment.  We love it.”

This project constructed eight miles of new shared-use paths and sidewalks in and around downtown Indianapolis highlighting adjacent cultural districts, incorporating art into public spaces, and emphasizing green and context sensitive design. Every intersection required careful consideration of the interactions between vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.

The project was a collaborative effort by the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works and Central Indiana Community Foundation.

United’s responsibilities included the design of detailed signing and marking plans, grading plans that included over 13,000 individual spot elevations and drainage design that included heavy usage of storm water planters to help reduce runoff into the City’s combined sewer system.

Project Description:  The rehabilitation of the I-70 bridge over the Wabash River in Vigo County required extensive research in order to develop a rehabilitation project that would meet the needs of the State while maintaining traffic during construction. The bridge is 1,961 feet long with 21 spans consisting of steel rolled beams and steel plate girders with a reinforced concrete deck. Preliminary design included multiple options for widening the existing bridge which compared construction cost, user cost, and impacts to sensitive environmental areas around the Wabash River. United successfully developed a project that met all of this criteria while also meeting the user demand for continuous use during construction.

Approximate Project Cost:  $12,000,000

Project Description:  The project consisted of the reconstruction of a two-way urban road with a two-way turn lane and two major intersection improvements with one signalization and one roundabout.  The intersection was initially scoped as a signalization, but determined that a roundabout would operate at a higher level of service (LOS) and have safer operations.  The maintenance of traffic for this project included a significant closure on 96th Street which is a heavy commuter route.  The success of the MOT was a result of good communication with the bordering properties, exceptional advanced route detour signing, and disseminated public information.

Project Description:  The US 27 over I-70 bridge is a two-span continuous composite steel plate girder structure with a total length of 182 feet.  It consists of a complex geometry and design with access ramps tying in at each corner of this single point interchange.

This interchange was designed to increase traffic flow by reducing the number of traffic signals to efficiently move traffic to and from the ramps and along US 27 mainline.  Large “edge girder” members were designed with connections to multiple members which carry the forces and moments to the large splice plates which rest on pot bearing s located on either side of the center pier.  More than 430 tons of structural steel and over 2000 cubic yards of concrete were used for this structure.  Curved, open window, decorative bridge railing sits atop the bridge deck, and tinted ashlar block architectural treatment accent the pier face and retaining walls below.

Project Description:  Design/Build project for the reconstruction and widening of 12.8 miles of I-65 between I-865 and US 52 included:  seven partial interchange reconstructions; pavement widening; added travel lanes; pavement reconstruction; retaining walls; local road improvements; four bridge replacements; seven bridge rehabilitations; CSX Railroad bridge replacement, CSX Railroad track re-alignment; signing; wetland mitigation; and transportation management plan.

This two-phase project involves adding travel lanes to I-65 from the I-865 interchange to US 52 just north of Lebanon. Phase 1 is a Design/Build project that involves adding one travel lane in each direction from I-865 to CR 100 and milling and resurfacing the existing lanes. Phase 2 is a Design/Build project that involves adding one travel lane in each direction and a full reconstruction of the existing pavement.

United Consulting served as managers of the field survey for this project. This included coordination with an aerial survey consultant and two additional ground survey consultants and performing a great deal of the ground supplemental survey, as well as providing ground and aerial control for the entire corridor. When additional pavement elevations were required during design, United Consulting coordinated with the INDOT district and traffic control consultant to collect this vital information overnight on this highly-traveled interstate.

The environmental services required by this project included the completion of a Level 3 Categorical Exclusion.  Major environmental services investigated during the completion of this documentation included cultural resources investigations, noise analysis, phase I and phase II investigations, and a wetland determination and delineation.  The project also resulted in coordination with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the US Army Corps of Engineers due to project impacts upon jurisdictional waters.  The project resulted in a Section 401 Water Quality Certification from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, a Regional General Permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers and three Construction in a Floodway Permits from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.  The project also required the completion of a Cemetery Development Plan due to construction disturbance within 100.0 feet of a nearby cemetery.
