Admiration and respect were common shared sentiments during Kent Downey’s retirement celebration, December 17, 2009. To start off the festivities, Steve Jones made a trip down memory lane with the numerous accomplishments and milestones Kent had made during his professional career at United over the past 35 years.
Kent’s wife, Kathy along with their daughter, Karry, her husband, Zack and their two children, Lily (Age 2) and Kayla (32 days old) came to help celebrate Kent’s outstanding career. Kent’s son, Kevin, his wife, Lisa, and brand new baby boy, Shane (30 days old), also came in for a much appreciated surprise visit from Chicago.
Kent, thank you for everything you’ve done for United. We wish you and your family all the best!
The Monon Bridge Ribbon Cutting & Dedication Ceremony was held on July 1 in the plaza underneath the new bridge on Carmel Drive. Speakers for the event included Mayor Jim Brainard, Carmel City Councilmen Ron Carter and Eric Seidensticker, and UNITED’S Dave Richter. The $3.5 million bridge includes a steel bowstring truss and was built to ensure the safety of Monon users. The bridge also has LED lights that can be used to celebrate holidays with a variety of colors.
In the early afternoon on February 5, looks of confusion were on employees faces, as a CNN film crew set up to shoot in the UNITED Bridge Team 2 area. Why would CNN be at UNITED? As it turns out, John King, the anchor of State of the Union on CNN, had interviewed Carmel Mayor, Jim Brainard, on how the stimulus plan could create much needed jobs for Hoosiers.
